DVD ready!!!

This is the announcement we have all been waiting for!
Sandgrains is finally READY!!!

It has taken a lot of time to iron out the final details. Having to replace music tracks when the edit has been closed is not an easy task. But Davide Pistoni and Mirco have done a truly fantastic job, and at the end of March we were able to finalise the audio and export the film to be prepared for distribution.

While we were waiting for the music, we have updated the trailer according to the edit and made it accessible in 7 languages on our website, and we cut the 52 minutes version of the film. The first version of 70 minutes has been made mainly for festival applications as they often require 60 min + in length to accept a film. While the 52min version is the one we will be distributing to the public, to broadcasters and distribution companies. 52 minutes is the most used international time standard for documentaries on TV and having the film formatted in this way will make it easier to place on the market. Making the 52 min version meant a little restructuring of a couple of scenes, the taking out of 3 characters, slimming down interviews, re-adapting the music and redoing the audio edit. Both versions of the documentary have also been subtitled in 7 languages: English, Portuguese, Swedish, Italian, Spanish, German and French and we are very grateful to all the people that have been helping us out in doing them: Corinna, Fiorella, Laura, Marie, Ana, Adan, Manuela, Benoit, Giorgia, João, Luis, Alice and N'dala, thank you so much!

The two 89GB and 84GB files have been brought to Stanleys Productions that have compressed them to create the masters of the DVDs, the Bluray and the digital download files. Then, also using the graphics by Lorenzo Dzieduszycki, they have printed 130 DVD copies and some Bluray Discs. Now we have just started sending out the perks to those of you that have donated to our project.

This event is one of the major documentary film markets in Europe and even though we have not been selected to screen the film at the actual festival we are very hopeful that the room dedicated to the Doc Outlook Market, where commissioners and buyers can watch a list of 350 noteworthy documentaries, can lead to something interesting.
The festival runs from the 19th until the 26th of April in Nyon, on the shores of Lake Geneve and Jordie will be going to represent Matchbox.
Here you can check out the page the festival has dedicated to our project.

Unregulated Shark Fishing in Cape Verde

As this is our last production update from Cape Verde and West Africa, we would like to share a discovery with you which we made during our stay in Mindelo, on the island of Sao Vicente. We decided to not go public with our progress because we needed to investigate something that has been proved to be a legal mess allowing unregulated and destructive fishing practices.

The European Union has an agreement with Cape Verde to fish highly migratory species, namely tuna. But Spanish and Portuguese vessels actually target sharks because of the high value of their fins on the Asian markets. This is done at the fringes of what is legal but it's having dramatic consequences on the local population. It is not illegal because the agreements are unclear and can be interpreted in various ways. But what we know for sure is that this practice goes against the foundation of the agreement, where it is stated that European fishing vessels should work sustainably and not have an impact on resources targeted by locals.

Sharks are top predators and removing them has effects on the entire food chain in the area. Smaller fish that would prefer to be in the open ocean stay close to shore to find refuge from the sharks. Those smaller species that have disappeared mysteriously are what locals have caught for centuries. The pressure created by sharks is now so weak that fish which used to shelter by shore now freely roam the open ocean. Local fishermen can't reach their target species unless they go far out with their little boats (which can have lethal consequences) and shoals are now in reach of international vessels, which can vacuum them up without having to take the risk of fishing them illegally within the 12 mile exclusion zone.

In 2009 the port of Mindelo saw 1400 tons of shark and shark fins. In the following year transshipment of shark products had more than doubled to 3200 tons, and by 2011 this reached 12.000 tons. These numbers are an indication of how worrying the whole situation is but don't represent the entire scale because much fishing remains unreported.

Here you can see the photo gallery for a glimpse of what we filmed during that week of investigation.

On the Greenpeace Vessel in West Africa

On the 25th of February Jordie and Gabriel left Cape Verde to join a Greenpeace vessel near Dakar. The Arctic Sunrise was exploring the seas of West Africa to identify and document supertrawler fishing activities. José was with us and we experienced first-hand the impact of these massive oceanic fish factories. A supertrawler looks like a floating skyscraper; they measure 140 meters in length and can catch up to 250 tons per day. We often saw them fishing in networked groups of nine to identify and scoop up gigantic schools of fish in their entirety. Nothing remains after they pass, aside from a cloud of hungry seagulls.

Our 8 days aboard the ship were used to film action sequences with inflatable rib boats and a helicopter flying around the trawlers. We got key interviews with campaigners that allow us to show the global aspect of the localized stories we had been following in Cape Verde. On a personal note we will never forget this experience; Jordie had his worst days of all of production being battered by sea sickness, while Gabriel came home euphoric for having fulfilled his dream of filming from a helicopter and with fond memories of the dolphins who would gather around our ship at night.

Here is the photo gallery by Pierre Gleizes.
and here you can find a short extract of our helicopter landing on the ship.

All photos copyright of Pierre Gleizes/Greenpeace

Mindelo is a quaint touristic city, with colonial architecture and beautiful beaches by the promenade. To be honest we had hoped to spend a few days there relaxing by the sea, but in the end the stories we found were so intense, and what we discovered about foreign fishing in Cape Verde was so stunning that we barely managed to stop, although we did manage to get a little rest at the end.
The 4 Sundays ahead of carnival see a celebration with the exhibition of a group, like the one of the Mandingas, and the city becomes alive with the rhythm of samba. An explosion of energy featuring man in black, the whole gay community and abundance of grog which gives a yellow tint to the eyes.
In Mindelo we also met Kiso, our Cape Verdian supporter and flight controller. He has been extremely welcoming and joined us for an unforgettable dive into the Cape Verdean culture at the Esplanada Hollanda, a bar where Cesaria Évora used to perform before she became famous, in exchange for a couple of glasses of grog.

After a long sleepless night at the airport, spent working with the wonderful free wifi there, we arrived at Mindelo on the island of Sao Vicente, part of the northern Barlavento archipelago.
We rented a flat (bartered to a great price by Francesca from our landlord Artur), and spent another intense 10 days there.
Mindelo is a strategic point for international fisheries: thanks to geological formations the port is the biggest and most active in all of CapeVerde.
We made several interviews with fisheries engineers, marine biologists and the CEO of the port's node for international and national fisheries. José ended his stay with us in Cape Verde and left for Gothenburg in Sweden.

Dear friends! Happy new year!
With enthusiasm, we inform you that the first crowdfunding campaign for the documentary 'Sandgrains' ended successfully!

110 donors (including individuals and associations) have contributed 10,833 pounds (12,986 euros), several hundred pounds / euros above our target!

The project also boasts the involvement of roughly 40 people who have contributed through their qualities to the logistics of the project (translators, graphic designers, researchers, people who have opened their homes and hosted the events, people who have cooked and welcomed..)

The 'Sandgrains' project has naturally evolved and expanded. We started with the idea of a documentary, and arrived at something more.

'Sandgrains' and Matchbox Media Collective celebrate today our community of supporters.
The network has grown and new ideas were born, such as the petition to raise awareness on fisheries with WWF.
Moreover, in the coming months, the 'Sandgrains' production will tell the stories of the characters through another medium, photography.
And as always we are open to new contributions, of any kind ...!

This is the victory of crowdsourcing: together we can!

With this newsletter we want to thank everyone who has contributed in an economically difficult period, those who have voluntarily donated their quality and time, and all the people who value independence of thought and storytelling ...

The community of Ribeira da Barca awaits us and we will be with them in 2 days.
We will send you updates and developments on our investigations and stories, and on top you will have the opportunity to understand from the inside the process of documentary production through our and Francesca's blog.

We'll be in contact soon, from the lands of Cesaria and her sodade ...!

Matchbox Media Collective.

Just a few lines to share the latest news before leaving for Cape Verde ...

Thanks to everyone who participated and made the event in Bologna possible, it has been a great success! Some very welcoming friends have opened 3 adjacent houses in the historical center of the city and offered canapés and refreshments to more than one hundred people who attended the two presentations by Matchbox Media and Sandgrains.

The evening brought new ideas and connections and allowed us to crowdfund £1,114 for the production of the documentary! THANKS SO MUCH TO EVERYONE!!

The next day we got some more good news!

Finally, after various meetings, the British NGO 'Global Ocean' donated £1,180 to 'Sandgrains' an amount that will cover the travel and equipments costs of Andrew, our underwater cameraman.

In short, the end of this year is giving us solid hopes regarding the practical possibilities of crowdsourcing and crowdfunding. At the moment we reached £8,026 and the total target is £10,000, with a total of 88 donors!

There is only one more week to go until the end of our crowdfunding campaign and there are real possibilities to reach the target!

We are asking you all one last effort! Please forward this project to friends and family, share it on social media, or if you can, contribute with a donation!

In the meantime, we wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.

WWF is working along Sandgrains to have an impact on the Common Fisheries Policy reform.

We're working towards a European fisheries policy that honours fishery agreements around the world. EU boats must abide by a sustainable fisheries policy wherever they operate to protect people and the environment from the adverse effects of overfishing.

Help us collect enough signatures for WWF's More Fish petition campaign, so that we can ask for a change in the policy.

WWF just published a page on their website to promote the work of the Sandgrains team. Visit this link to know more.

Arrived in Ribeira da Barca and met Demisi, our fixer. We received a warm welcome from his aunt Tata who granted us excellent hospitality at her house sleeping next to her pet chickens and loud rooster. Demici usually works as a local guide for tourists, and he introduced us all the local characters in the village. We slowly learned Portuguese and the local version of Cape Verde creole, gaining even more trust (and provided endless amusement for) the villagers as we adjusted to the way of life. Many people such as Captain Gaita and farmer Dino approached us, giving us their points of view and explaining the situation on the ground, enabling us to gain a much clearer insight into the life and conditions of the village. We met with the president of the local fishermen association who informed us of the DCP project. We couldn’t talk about fishing without seeing the process for ourselves so went out to sea with local fishermen. Alain, a Frenchman living and working as a diver in Cape Verde (who was also involved in the DCP project) agreed to be our underwater cameraman. We recorded a session with Tcheka, Cape Verdean musician and winner of Radio France International Music of the World Awards 2005. We also met the agent of Cesaria Evora , and local musicians, to secure music rights. In Sao Vicente we met with experts on fisheries development, marine biologists, marine engineers from the University of Mindelo, and Navy officers as well as local entrepreneurs.

Matchbox Media is opening up submissions for the creation of Sandgrain's Logo!

Here on the side is the crowdsourced flyer for the documentary film made by Lorenzo Dzieduszycki.

Outside the coast of West Africa, on the islands of Cape Verde, beaches are disappearing, and with them a way of life. José returns home to witness his fellow islanders struggling for survival while European fleets empty their ocean. Sandgrains is a crowdfunded and crowdsourced documentary telling the story of a former football star discovering why and how the beach where he started to play football began to disappear.

We are developing a campaign together with Global Ocean in order to create a documentary film that becomes a catalyst for real impact.

The campaign is starting to take shape around asking for a change in policy at the EU level and we are planning to involve football celebrities and high profile ocean conservationists to champion a call to action.

Become Sandgrains' graphic designer by creating the logo!
The slogan for the campaign is Footballers for a Future with Fish.

The ideogram should reflect ideas around a soccer ball with fish printed on it. Sandgrains' campaign is asking for a petition to stop fishing trawler subsidies and we are at the beginning of developing a visual petition for people to upload their image with their own football with a fish painted on it.

If you'd like to give a hand please get in contact with jordie@matchboxmedia.org

Here below are a few drawings made by Howie Cooke to give an idea

We now also have a team of dedicated and crowdsourced researchers working on finding core audiences and implementing the data for marketing Sandgrains to funders.

We've crowdsourced subtitles for the Sandgrains trailer, now in Danish, Turkish, English, Italian, Portuguese and Swedish! All done through the wonderful Universal Subtitles app that allows for anyone to translate into their language directly on the Sandgrains Home page. Do you speak Japanese? Finnish?

We would for this documentary to have a worldwide impact, and to make this possible we developed this site to support multiple languages. Now there are only a few, but we’d like for You to get involved!

Do you like the idea?

Is there an audience in your language?

Can you use your skills to support us?

Could you help as part of a school or college project?

Whatever the reason, we’d love you to help us out, maybe even by telling your friends about us

Maybe you have a friend you’d like to send the trailer but he might not understand the language?

Our videos incorporate the Universal Subtitles widget that allow you add subtitles in your language.

Why not subtitle the video here?

Crowdsourcing number one

The first elements of crowdsourced talent are improving our project!

Joao created portuguese subtitles for our trailer and started translating the website so that we can soon have the site ready for the lusophone audiences worldwide. Joao found us on the web, and because he has been to Ribeira da Barca and actually knows personally Demici, our local fixer, he took the project by heart and started helping us out.

Many thanks Joao!!!

We have scheduled 2 months to shoot in the archipelago. We still need to find an underwater camera person. Are you the one we are looking for?

We are planning to shoot a few underwater sequences for this documentary, but nobody of our team has the experience nor the gear, and in Cape Verde we had difficulties finding someone up to the job.

Do you have a friend that might be interested? Why not link him this page?

Unfortunately for this job we can only allow a fee that will cover all the expenses, check out the budget to see for yourself.

If you feel like helping us out with this aspect of production, and are happy to do it just for the fame, let us know.
Just drop us a line also if you just want to discuss all this a little further.

Crowd-sourcing The Logo

As our first major crowd-sourcing experiment we decided to open a competition for the realization of the film’s ideogram and logotype.

Some say that the crowd has talent, We believe them!
Are you a graphic designer? Can you do the job? You are in the team!

Are you a professional designer and want to become part of the team?
Or are you a graphics amateur wanting to give your shot at this?
Maybe you are a student looking to find the perfect work to bring to the exams and want to make something that becomes real?

If you participate with your idea, you will get a behind the scenes access through our subscribers’ newsletter for producers and a special note on our web site.
If you win the contest your work will become the logo of this project, and you will become the designer for this project with a profile in the team page and a credit in the film. Check out the budget to see how much is allocated for this paid job.

If you choose to take part in the contest, here are some guidelines:

You should submit a finished and fully developed graphic idea for a logo (ideogram) and the ‘Sandgrains’ text (logotype) connected to it.

The idea should be that these two elements go together but can also be used separately.

Keep in mind that this creation of yours, if selected, will be giving the tone to the entire graphic visualization of the project on different media.

The design should take inspiration from the issues explored in the film; there is a lot of information in this web page, but if you would like to discuss further any aspect relating even remotely to the work you intend to do, don’t hesitate to drop us a mail.

If your work is ready for submission just export a full resolution image, and send it along with your full contact details to Jordie or Gabriel, whose contacts you can find here.

If you win the contest and accept to be the graphic designer for the project, bear in mind that this is an innovative but also risky way of making a film, and we can’t foresee how much we will be able to fundraise.
